Electrolysis Process

During the electrolysis process, • positively charged ions (cations) move to the cathode (negative electrode) • negatively charged ions (anions) move to the anode (positive electrode) For example, during the electrolysis of molten lead(II) bromide, PbBr2, positively charged lead(II) ions, Pb2+, move to the negatively charged cathode while negatively charged bromide ions, Br–, move to the positively charged anode. Electrolytes in the solid state cannot conduct electricity because there are no free-moving ions to conduct the electricity.
